While Mississippi River Headwaters is the main attraction at Itasca State Park, there are many other reasons to take a road trip there. It is the largest and one of the oldest state parks in Minnesota. Located in Itasca is a sizable wilderness haven and some of Minnesota’s last old-growth pine forests.

There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as long stretches of trail for hiking and biking on paved paths, interesting historical sites, naturalist bus tours, boat tours of Lake Itasca, and four lakes perfect for swimming or getting out on a boat. Glacial Lakes State Park

Located in west-central Minnesota, this park is ideally situated at the transition between the prairie and the forest. A rare remnant of native prairieland can be found in Glacial Lakes State Park, where a plethora of wildflowers bloom in their proper seasons. Signalness Lake, which offers swimming, boating (with electric motors only), and canoe rentals, is located within the park .

Sunfish, bass, pike, crappies, perch, and walleye are just some of the fish that can be caught from a lake’s fishing pier. Trails for walking, riding, and biking are available during the warmer months, while ungroomed paths are ideal for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing in the winter. Deer, beavers, pileated woodpeckers, and coyotes are all possible wildlife sightings.

Lake Bronson State Park

Lake Bronson State Park is located in the state’s remote northwest corner, a region first settled by Native Americans. Walleye, perch, pike, and both large and smallmouth bass can be caught in Lake Bronson, making fishing a year-round activity. There is informational signage about the park’s prairie and aspen groves.

The pull-through sites are close to the boat trailer access on the north side of Lake Bronson. The sites are massive, and many of them have trees overhead, providing privacy and protection from the sun on those rare occasions when it actually gets hot.

Hickory Hills Campground

You can rent a recreational vehicle in Freeborn County and head to Hickory Hills Campground for a relaxing getaway into rural Minnesota. Travelers in search of adventure can find many opportunities for discovery in the area surrounding the Iowa and Minnesota border. There are full hookups for your recreational vehicle at Hickory Hills Campground, including electricity, water, and sewage. A refreshing swim in the pool is the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing or exploring during the warmer months.

Lake Shetek State Park

The Ojibwe term for pelican is “shetek.” To get a clear picture of this, visit Lake Shetek State Park during  late fall or early summer, when white pelicans arrive for the season to set up their nests in the area. Many of the pioneer cabin sites still have interpretive signs, and one even has a cabin that has been preserved and a memorial to the 14 pioneers who are buried nearby. 

There are two pull-through campsites at Oak Woods Campground, and they’re conveniently located near the campground’s swimming beach, playground, and volleyball court. Portions of the park are undergoing restoration so that they can once again resemble the prairie they once were and feature a plethora of wildflowers in the spring.

Trail’s End Campground

Trail’s End Campground is where you should go to get a true feel for the Minnesota wilderness. It is only by exploring the woods on foot or by launching a boat onto one of the many nearby rivers or lakes that one can get the full benefit of the natural environment. The deeper one travels into the wild, the more magnificent the landscape becomes.

Tent camping is fantastic in these parts. Tent camping among the trees may be preferable to staying in one of the many RV sites. Trail’s End Campground in Minnesota perfectly captures the great outdoors of the state, making for a more authentic camping experience.

Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park

Minnesota’s newest state park opened in 2017, and it features a combination of the historic Soudan Underground Mine and the lake’s natural beauty. Soudan, in the state’s renowned Iron Range, was a bustling iron ore mining center at the turn of the century. In 1963, the U.S. Steel Corporation gave the state of Minnesota the mine and 1,200 acres surrounding it to create Soudan Underground Mine State Park.

Expanding Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park required the purchase of 2,848 additional acres by the state in 2010. With this expansion, the park now features both a major historical site and a large wilderness area. Regular underground mine trips led by professional guides (only in the summer) and ground tours that describe what happened to the ore after it was mined, the machinery used to process it, and the jobs that the mines provided are the best way to learn about the area’s history.

Maplewood State Park

The landscape of this state park consists of wooded hills with a cluster of lakes in the valleys between them. Pull-through sites are located near Grass Lake, where visitors can enjoy beautiful sunsets after a day of biking, fishing, or hiking. Maplewood State Park has RV camping, horse camping, and horse trails.

There are miles of trails perfect for mountain biking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, both groomed and ungroomed. The park is situated on a set of hills, making a few of the trails more difficult than others, but rewarding visitors with stunning views at the trail’s end. Because of its extensive maple forests, this park is especially beautiful in the fall.

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park

Visit this beautiful state park on the south side of Lake Mille Lacs for breathtaking panoramas of the lake. Explore the park’s 100 ft observation tower for a bird’s-eye view of the lake, or stroll the park’s rolling hills and trails while taking in the scenery of Mille Lacs Kathio State Park. There is a large, brand-new playground and a swimming beach at Ogechie Lake.

Canoes, kayaks, and rowboats are available for rent so you can paddle along the park’s Rum River. Pull-through sites can be found in Petaga Campground, which is close to the river and a swimming beach. When temps soar in the summer, cool shade is a welcome sight. Visitors can warm up in a warming cottage after enjoying snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, riding a snowmobile, or sledding down a hill during the winter.

The Vermilion Trail Campground is an oasis in the wilds of northern Minnesota, right up against the shores of beautiful Embarrass Lake. The RV park is densely wooded, so setting up camp by the lake in an RV can feel like an isolated experience. There are approximately 50 available sites, some of which are located right on the water and others further inland, surrounded by thick forest.

All of the campsites have access to electricity and running water, and there’s a dump station nearby for anyone who needs it. Close proximity to toilets and showers at the bathrooms. Gooseberry State Park is one of eight North Shore state parks and features the Gooseberry River, waterfalls, and some of the best Lake Superior coastline in the area. Gooseberry Falls State Park is linked to the Superior Hiking Trail and features paved bike trails and trails for hiking.

There are miles of cross-country ski trails and a mile of skate skiing available in the winter. Those on snowshoes or snowmobiles are also welcome. You can stop by the park’s gift shop and visitor center whenever you like, and there’s a restaurant just 2 miles away that’s open all year long as well. After a day of exploring the park, return to your RV for a night of stargazing and a s’mores roasting session.

This tiny but mighty state park is perfect for those who want a taste of nature along with their Bemidji adventure, and it’s conveniently located close to the water from the city which shares its name. Several hiking trails can be found within the park, and the Paul Bunyan State Trail can be followed south to Crow Wing State Park in the vicinity of Baxter.

This park is a hotspot for birdwatchers due to the high probability of seeing eagles and ospreys and the abundance of other species. A sandy beach and a marina with 16 boat slips are available. With the park’s free Wi-Fi, people can even work in their RV while they’re there.

Located in southern Minnesota, on the coasts of Albert Lea Lake, Myre-Big Island Campground welcomes RVers of all ages. Only 90 minutes from Minneapolis, it is in close proximity to the city of Albert Lea and its services, restaurants and  supermarkets.

In comparison to the White Fox Campground’s 59 open sites, which only have 15 electrical hookups, the Big Island Campground’s 34 wooded sites have more than their fair share of amenities. Albert Lea campers also have access to two group campsites with a cooking and mess hall, located on New York Point and  Little Island. Each campground has its own set of restrooms and showers, and all of them are conveniently located near the park’s hiking trails and fishing ponds.

Zippel Bay Campground

Zippel Bay State Park and Campground is situated on the shores of Lake of the Woods in far northern Minnesota. The lake sits right on the international boundary between the two countries, and the surrounding area is heavily forested. Driving time from Duluth to this campground is four hours, and from Winnipeg it’s three hours.

RVs up to 50 ft are welcome at Zippel Bay Campground. Vault toilets are available year-round, while the shower house and dump station are only open from the middle of May to the middle of September. RV campers at Zippel Bay Campground have easy access to the park’s many features, including the beach and hiking paths.

Whitewater State Park

This park is situated facing the Whitewater River in the southeastern part of the state, close to the Whitewater Wildlife Management Area, making it an excellent location for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. The park is home to the Louisiana waterthrush and other endangered species that make up 40 percent of Minnesota’s total. Additionally, brown, brook, and rainbow trout fishing are excellent.

There’s a trail for every kind of hiker here, from flat to hilly to flat with footbridges. Water at a swimming beach comes straight from a spring. The iconic Elba Fire Tower is only 2 miles away, and the CCC/WPA buildings within the park are sure to please history buffs.

To my knowledge, no other resort is as focused on families as the North Star Lake Resort. When you take another look at the lake, you’ll notice that there are plenty of ways to expand your idea of water recreation. You can have a great time with the family on the water trampolines of varying sizes and the mini floating rock climbing walls.

Many other activities are available in the area if you find the water unappealing. The World Wolf Center, for example. A sanctuary where wolves can learn how to live in human society so that they can be protected in the wild. Of course, that is not all there is to see; you can also go to the Soudan mine or underground Ironworld Discovery Center.
