Niagara Falls

The Niagara River serves as a de facto border between New York and Ontario, Canada. There are actually three separate waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls. While Horseshoe Falls straddles the international boundary between the United States and Canada, American Falls and the considerably smaller Bridal Veil Falls are located wholly within the United States. The Niagara River is home to the three waterfalls, with Goat Island and Luna Island serving as buffer zones between the falls. When crossing this section of the border, everything to the west of the river is Canada, and everything to the east is the United States, despite the fact that these countries share a common border.

The largest of the three waterfalls, Horseshoe Falls, with an average flow rate of 2,400 cubic meters per second. Season and time of day affect that number differently. When Lake Erie is at its fullest in late spring and early summer, the water velocity reaches its maximum, peaking at a record-breaking 6,400 cubic meters per second. The flow can dip to as low as 1,400 cubic meters per second in the winter and at night, when water is redirected to hydroelectric generating facilities.

In the summer, people flock to Prospect Point Park, and the paths along the park are flooded with photographers. Trying to snap a picture of the breathtaking waterfall plunging over the cliff in front of them, with the advice to use a long exposure to achieve a picture with a silky-smooth waterscape. Goat Island, which is reachable by foot and car over a bridge across American Falls, provides visitors with even more breathtaking vantage points of the waterfall.

For a memorable experience, don’t miss a ride on the Maid of the Mist, a boat that has been taking visitors into the waterfall’s nearby rapids since 1846. There is no better way to enjoy the 51-meter (167-foot) height of Horseshoe Falls than bobbing at the bottom and staring up; however, the plastic ponchos provided by the crew are a necessary, since the name of the boat is extremely fitting; anticipate to get totally covered in the spray from the falls.

It’s possible to see things from an other angle on the other side of the river. The Skylon Tower at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, soars 158 meters (518 feet) into the air and provides breathtaking views of the falls. lake You can take in the scenery from the room’s rotating observation deck, or dine leisurely at one of two restaurants.

Now that we have the front, above, and below perspectives covered, we need to turn our attention to the back.

Visitors to the Journey Behind the Falls attraction can go through a series of incredible tunnels carved into the rock and peek out at the waterfalls from the safety of cave entrances that lead directly to the falls. Once more, prepare to be drenched.

You may see Niagara Falls from a different angle by taking a helicopter ride, riding a skywheel, or zipping through the canyon, so there’s something for every kind of daredevil here. Do not attempt to replicate the feats of Charles Blondin, who in the 1850s enjoyed tightrope walking across the waterfalls and even stopped in the middle to make and eat an omelet.

You need to buy tickets ahead of time if you want to go inside the statue and look out over New York from the top of Lady Liberty’s head.

Its roof garden and bar are great places to relax in between shows, and they both have sculptures by modern artists.

Statue of Liberty

The pale-green statue of Lady Liberty stands tall in New York Harbor. She holds her torch high to shine light on the world and show newcomers the way to the Land of the Free.

The Statue of Liberty is known all over the world as a symbol of the United States. It may come as a surprise to learn that it is actually a French sculpture of a Roman goddess. In the 1860s, a French campaign to give the American people a gift gained steam. It was decided to build a statue of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. Copper smelters in a Parisian workshop made the statue, which was then put on an iron frame designed by a young architect named Gustave Eiffel.

When you get off the ferry (boats leave from Battery Park on the New York side of the bay and Liberty State Park on the New Jersey side), you can really see how big the statue is. She is tall, measuring 151 feet to the tip of her torch and 305 feet with the pedestal. The 11-pointed star that Lady Liberty stands on is actually an old fort built to keep the British out during the War of 1812. When the French designers saw that Fort Wood was no longer being used, they knew it was the perfect spot because ships coming into New York would have to sail past it.

Modern tourists can buy tickets to go inside the pedestal and statue. Both have platforms from which they can see the monument and its surroundings from different angles. You can climb all the way to the crown, but the only way to get there is by stairs, and there are only a certain number of tickets. The narrow path that leads up even higher to the torch was closed for good in 1916 after it was damaged by German saboteurs. Symbols are all over the place. The date that the American colonies declared independence is written on a tablet that Lady Liberty holds.

The seven rays on her crown stand for the seven seas and seven continents, showing that the United States is open to everyone. One foot on the statue is slightly raised, as if she is stepping over a broken chain that is partly hidden under her robes. This is thought to represent the end of slavery, which was still a controversial topic when the statue was finished in 1886, 20 years after the Civil War ended.

She is no longer causing trouble. We Americans now love the Statue of Liberty because it now stands as a symbol of our nation.

New York City Museums and Memorials

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) houses some of the world’s best collections of work by artists including Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Roy Lichtenstein. If you still want to see more art after you’ve been through all four floors, you can go to the Guggenheim. The building itself is a masterpiece, an inverted ziggurat designed by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

When you’ve seen enough art, the American Museum of Natural History has a different kind of wonder to show you. Inside this temple to Mother Nature, kids and adults alike are amazed by things like a 94-foot-long blue whale hanging from the ceiling and more dinosaur skeletons than you can shake a dinosaur stick at.

Visiting the National September 11 Memorial & Museum is a more somber but no less important thing to do. Here, the exact spot where the Twin Towers used to stand is marked by a pair of square pools surrounded by America’s largest man-made waterfalls. Around the edge of each pool, the names of the 2,983 people who died are written in bronze parapets as a memorial to those who died.
