Best RV Parks in Montana

Montana is widely regarded as a paradise for those who enjoy being outdoors. You can find activities on the snow, on the water, on bikes, and on foot. Big Sky Country is a term used by those who have visited there to describe the area for its untamed, unearthly beauty.

Breathtaking views await you on a journey into the Rockies alongside some of the longest stretches of state border with Canada. It’s one of the northernmost and largest states, ranking at number four overall. Its sparse population attracts nature and birdwatching enthusiasts all year round. Montana is the epitome of a perfect vacation spot.

We are visiting Montana in our first year of full-time RVing and Phil and I couldn’t contain our excitement even if we really tried, but we’re not trying. Our goal is to visit all 50 states and US national parks while we are on the road and this state is definitely a top destination for us!

That is why I had to create a compilation of the best rv parks in Montana, to get us prepared for our future travels to this gorgeous outdoor wonderland. Please note though, this list in not in any particular order. The best RV parks for you may very well be at the bottom!

Blackfoot River is a great place to spend the day tubing, swimming, and watching wildlife; the Hiawatha Trail is one of the most beautiful stretches of railroad for hikers and cyclists; and the Garnet Ghost Town is a fascinating historical site. If you take Highway 2 south from West Glacier RV Park, you’ll find Mountain Meadow RV Park. There are four log cabins, a trout pond, and 56 RV sites with full hookups on 33 wooded acres surrounded by trees and mountains. It takes less than an hour to get to Flathead Lake, Whitefish, or Glacier National Park from there.

Yellowstone’s Edge RV Park

Campers looking to explore Montana’s Gold West Country will find the park in Dillon to be ideal. Blacktail Creek flows peacefully through the well-kept park, providing a tranquil atmosphere. Even though the park is in a relatively isolated location, it is actually only few blocks from Dillon’s downtown.

Located around an hour drive of Missoula, Nugget RV Park in St. Regis is conveniently located just off Interstate 90. With two miles of trails wind through the woods and open fields that border their property. Campground amenities include a clubhouse, laundry room, pool, playground, and comfy pull-through sites with full hookups. There is also a coffee shop that opens at dawn and serves lattes, mochas, and other beverages. You can go fishing or rafting only on Clark Fork River, or you can check out the town’s antique shop and cafe for some huckleberry pie. We like to bring a collapsible bucket with us to be prepared for anything we may want to take back with us.

Located conveniently close to Flathead Lake, this first-rate campground is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s a fantastic option for families looking to spend time together in nature because of the variety of water activities, breathtaking scenery, and convenient facilities it provides.

Rental paddle boards and kayaks are available at Outback Montana RV Park, and guests can also swim, fish, hike, water ski, and boat. The park also features excellent dining options. The landscaping is attractive and pet-friendly. In addition, the rates in Montana RV park are the lowest we could find.

The 7th Ranch RV Camp is a good option if you’re looking for a place to stay near Little Bighorn National Monument. All of the pull-thru sites have picnic tables, as well as both shaded and open areas, and there are a total of 48 full hook-up sites as well as 22 partial hook-up sites.

It’s a great bonus that there’s a place to clean your RV right there. Explore Billings and the Custer Battlefield Museum on a day trip. Hebgen Lake is a favorite destination for people looking to go dry fly fishing, camp out, or take out a boat in southwestern Montana. There is an RV park on the lake’s northern shore, and it’s just 15 minutes from Yellowstone’s West Entrance. They have a marina with kayaks and motorized boats rentals and boat slip rentals in addition to their 36 RV sites and 16 cabins. Several hiking as well as biking trails can be found on Mount Hebgen, which is just across the street.

Granite Peak RV Resort

Located in a quiet area near the Lolo National Forest, but still close to town’s amenities. Travelers and adventurers can rest their weary heads at Granite Peak RV Resort, a 55-acre property with private mini golf, a heated pool, hiking trails, and full-service facilities. Rivers, wildlife, lakes, ghost towns, mountains, mines, and more can all be found in this central region of the United States.

Choosing how to spend your day between the resort’s many amenities and the area’s sights will be challenging. Granite Peak RV Resort is a favorite among families due to the abundance of fun activities available there. They are especially pleased with the free WiFi service, which is always improving.

Beartooth Highway, which straddles the Wyoming–Montana state line, is an excellent choice for those seeking a picturesque route to explore in a rented recreational vehicle. There are full hookups available for your rented recreational vehicle at this park, including 50-amp electricity and parking spots that are suitable for RVs up to 70 ft long. 

You can cool off in the small pool, and your canine companions can run around in the dog park. RV parks in Red Lodge often have bike rentals available for those who would rather not navigate the town’s one-way streets in their rented campervans.

Outside of Anaconda in a peaceful setting is Big Sky RV & Campground. There are 18 RV hookup sites available here. There is a grassy and gravel area at each site. All of the 12 pull-through sites and 6 of the back-in sites offer 30 or 50 amp service, and free cable TV hookups. Sites up to 45ft long accommodate RVs with slide-outs, so you won’t have to worry about finding a place to park your rented recreational vehicle. You can use the park’s free Wi-Fi,  in addition to hot showers, horseshoe pits and a dog park.

West of Billings, Montana, there is an RV park called Old West. Old West RV Park has sites that can accommodate RVs of all sizes. Every campsite has full utilities with its own picnic table and free Wi-Fi. There are only 15 sites in this RV park, but they are all on flat gravel pads. There are laundromats and bathrooms with hot showers available on the premises.

Within Smith River Valley, you’ll find Conestoga Campground, an ideal home base for exploring the state’s untamed wilderness. This location is halfway between Yellowstone and Glacier, so a trip to both parks can be easily planned.

Each of their 47 RV sites has a maximum length of 42 feet, making it suitable for even the largest RVs. There are plenty of facilities geared toward children with standard amenities like laundry, showers, and full hookups. In addition to a pet-friendly playground, they also provide a recreation room with TV, games, and a movie library. Bring the kids and the RV to this campground.

Finley Point Campground

Camping amenities at this location include fire rings and picnic tables at each site, as well as a marina with boat slips, and a boat sewers dump and a picnic area. Vacationing in an RV rented near the Townsend/Canyon Ferry Lake KOA in Montana’s mountains is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Because of the playground, dog park, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits, you can just stay to have fun. And if you’re planning on bringing your RV, you’ll be happy to know that they sell propane and firewood right there.

Located between Libby and Kalispell, Logan State Park spans 17 acres and is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Logan State Park, part of the Thompson Chain of Lakes State Park, is home to beautiful ponderosa pine forests and the opportunity to go boating, fishing, swimming, or water-skiing on the Lower Thomson Lakes.

There is a campground at Logan State Park that is equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, restrooms with vault toilets and hot showers, and potable water for campers staying in tents, trailers, and RVs. Multiple picnic areas, a dump station, and a visitor center are also available.

You can get to Yellowstone National Park, one of the most popular in the world, from this campground. Big Arm Unit Campground at Flathead Lake State Park can be found on the lake’s southwest shore, and it features 40 campsites and three pavilions, all of which are situated directly on the water and offer amazing views. Many people use it as a starting point for boat rides to Wild Horse Island.

Campers can take advantage of the campsite’s showers, flush toilets, and dishwashing sinks, and locals love to spend their time in the water, on the water, on land, or on two wheels exploring the area’s many trails on foot or two-wheeled vehicles. There is a fishing license requirement for Flathead Lake, as the campsite is located at the lake’s southern end, on Flathead Indian Reservation.

Swan Lake Campground is a leisure place near the community of Swan Lake that offers 38 family-sized campsites and big group sites, and it is situated in the center of Flathead National Forest, which is bordered by the Swan Mountain Range.

Campers can take advantage of the campground’s paved parking areas, vault toilets, picnic tables, and drinking water, as well as the two loops’ wide variety of open, roomy sites and more grouped, shady options. Kayaking, fishing,  swimming, hiking, and mountain biking are just some of the recreational opportunities available.

Flathead National Forest surrounds the 24-acre Holland Lake Campground, located at the foot of Swan Mountain Range. This campground has 39 designated campsites with fire rings, picnic tables, restrooms with toilets, hot showers, and potable water spread out over two loops. Holland Lake, which is close to the campground, spans 400 acres and is a popular destination for water sports like boating, swimming, fishing, and kayaking. Nearby Bob Marshall Wilderness is a great place to go hiking or backcountry camping.

Placid Lake State Park

Located 28mi northeast of Missoula, Placid Lake State Park is a 31-acre public park on the eastern shore of Lake Placid that is known for its stunning scenery, excellent trout fishing, abundant wildlife, and wide range of recreational opportunities.

There are a total of 40 campsites at Placid Lake State Park, including 17 that have access to electricity. There is also a hike-bike camping site with racks for nine tents, as well as fire pits, bear-resistant food lockers, drinking water, and a roofed shelter with a picnic table and power outlets.

Beautiful Langohr Springs Campground can be found in Hyalite Canyon, in Bozeman Ranger District of the Gallatin National Forest. Hyalite Canyon is home to several hiking paths, and Hyalite Creek is a great place to go fishing or swimming. The Langohr Springs Campground is located 12 miles south of Bozeman and features both individual family campsites and a big group site that can fit up to 50 people. There are trash cans, drinking water, vault toilets, and fire rings at each campsite, as well as picnic tables.

The limestone caves that give Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park in Jefferson County its name are the park’s most famous attraction. The beautiful limestone caverns, and lined with huge columns, stalactites, helictites, and stalagmites, were the impetus for the creation of Montana’s first and most well-known state park.

The park features a modern visitor center with amphitheater, a large campsite with cabins, a teepee, and showers that are available all year, picnic spots, and a number of hiking routes. Mountain biking, guided and unguided interpretive nature walks, and bird and animal viewing are just some of the services and activities offered at the park.

Woodbine Campground

Woodbine Campground is a secluded site in Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in southwest Montana, known for its plenty of shade and breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped mountain peaks.

There are both individual and group sites available at this campground, some are ADA accessible, as well as campfire rings with grills, picnic tables, vault toilets, and running water. Several different types of trout can be caught with relative ease in the Stillwater River, and hikers enjoy the 1.5mi round-trip Woodbine Falls Trail. The lovely Sioux Charley Lake is accessible by horseback through the Stillwater Trail.

This summer saw the opening of West Glacier RV Park, a campground situated a mere mile from Glacier National Park’s West Entrance. Just across Middle Fork of the Flathead River, this campground offers full-service RV sites as well as modern cabins, all of which are within easy walking distance of West Glacier Village’s plethora of stores, cafes, and restaurants. Campers with huge rigs will appreciate the paved roads and spacious pull-through sites, each of which comes with a barbecue grill, a fire pit, and a picnic table.

Hellgate Campground and Group Use Shelter Area is the largest built campground at Canyon Ferry Reservoir. It is located on the reservoir’s banks and is flanked by the beautiful Big Belt and Elkhorns mountain ranges.

The campground features both individual, double campsites, and three group use sheltered areas with power, picnic tables, vault toilets, fire rings, and drinking water. In the winter, visitors can go ice fishing or ice skating on Canyon Ferry Reservoir, just two of the many seasonal activities available.

Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park

Located in West Yellowstone, Montana, near the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park, as the name might imply, this RV Campground is a great place to stay. It was opened in 1996, and since then, the campground has undergone two expansions, all of which have resulted in the addition of several modern conveniences. 

Campers here may easily reach a wide variety of exciting destinations thanks to the park’s convenient setting. You may go on a stroll of Yellowstone, ride horses through the forest, fly fishing, go mountain biking, and so much more. Located on the eastern coast of Seeley Lake, Big Larch Campground is a great spot for picnicking, camping, and water sports. Individual tent sites with picnic tables and campfire rings are offered on a first-come, first-served basis at a wooded campground. Two bigger group camping spaces are also available.

Day-use picnic area with swimming beach, boat ramp, and trailer parking; vault toilets; garbage collection; recycling bins; drinking water; trash cans. The campground, located at an altitude of around 4,000 feet, enjoys a mild summer environment thanks to the plentiful shade provided by towering pine trees.

Back in the middle of the 19th century, the state’s mining industry was already well established. Butte was at the epicenter of the mining boom, and at its peak, the city boasted enough of an immigrant population that it was the largest between Minneapolis and Seattle. This was in 1917.

The Butte KOA is a great starting point for exploring this fascinating piece of American history, and camping there in your rented RV is a great opportunity to get to know the area. The 42-acre Salmon Lake State Park on the lake’s eastern shore is open to the public and serves as a picturesque and serene location for a wide variety of water-based recreational pursuits. Salmon Lake State Park is a family-friendly campground in a beautiful wooded environment located 32mi northeast of Missoula in the Clearwater River system between the Mission and Swan mountain ranges.

In addition to a fire pit, bear-proof food storage containers, running water, power outlets, and a roofed shelter with picnic tables, the hike-bike campsite also features a bike rack and a stand for maintaining bicycles. Water sports, as well as other activities including fishing, canoeing, swimming, boating, birdwatching, kayaking, and picnicking, are popular pastimes.

The Divide Bridge Recreation Area is located on 80 acres at an elevation of 5,400ft along the Big Hole River, and it is the site of the Divide Bridge Campground, which provides 24 camping sites equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets, and drinkable water. The area is known for its breathtaking scenery and abundance of outdoor pursuits like walking, biking, fishing, swimming, paddling, and rafting. We have rafting guides available in the summer, and leashed pets are welcome at the campground.

Upper Thompson Lake Campground

Over 3,000 acres and 20 miles long between Kalispell and Libby, Thompson Chain of Lakes State Park is home to 18 lakes, including Lower Thompson Lake, Upper Thompson Lake,  Horseshoe Lake, Little McGregor Lake, and Loon Lake.

On the coast of Upper Thompson Lake is a campground that has 83 individual campsites and 8 group sites, which are all primitive and without running water. Camping, boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming, and canoeing are just some of the recreational activities that may be enjoyed in the region, which also features a boat ramp, built fire pits, picnic tables, and vault toilets.

Conveniently located in the middle of Big Horn County, Hardin KOA is a campground perfect for families. Hardin KOA is conveniently located for day trips to Yellowstone National Park, Mt. Rushmore, and Bighorn Canyon.

At the campground and in the surrounding area, guests can engage in a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, such as hiking, boating, mountain biking, swimming, fishing, and seasonal hunting. The campground is available all year long and provides a serene retreat for campers, families, and nature lovers.

Rocky Gorge Campground

Camping is available at Rocky Gorge Campground in the Kootenai National Forest, right near to Lake Koocanusa. There are sixty RV and tent sites available, each with a picnic table, a fire ring, a water hookup, and a vault toilet, and all surrounded by beautiful woodlands and grassy islands. A dock and a well-developed boat launch are offered to campers, and some sites even have tent mats. Enjoy swimming, hiking, fishing, and mountain biking, as well as power and boating with the convenience of a boat ramp.

The Big Timber / Greycliff KOA is easily accessible from Interstate 90 and provides facilities that will appeal to campers of all ages. The heated pool, hot tub, and horseshoes are all reserved for adults. At the end of a tiring day, you may relax in the clean, comfortable stalls of the laundromat and freshen up your wardrobe with a hot shower.

The KOA is a fantastic place to stay if you’re in the area and have a recreational vehicle. The size of the setup does not matter. There are both open and shady options, as well as pull-through and back-in campsites. Full hookups are provided, however if you don’t need sewer or sewage services, only water and electricity are included. Many camping areas provide picnic tables and grills.

The Kootenai River Campground is an alternative location, also in northwest Montana. This park is in Kootenai National Forest and is situated on the Kootenai River. This Montana RV park puts its guests within easy reach to a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, including canoeing, fishing, hunting, and hiking. There are open and shady spaces for RVs. There are both complete and incomplete connections. Each spot features a fire pit and picnic table.

Wayfarers / Flathead Lake State Park

Half a mile to the south of Bigfork, one of Montana’s most endearing towns, is Wayfarers State Park, a recreational area with stunning views of Flathead Lake, and some of the state’s most spectacular sunsets. 

There are 30 tent and RV sites available, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and access to a restroom with showers, vault toilets, pit toilets, and running water. There are trailer and boat dump stations, ice and firewood sales, a group-use shelter, and a children’s playground at this park, and another park, Harry Horn Park, is right next door. The park is a great place to go swimming, canoeing, fishing, canoeing, and even canoeing.

Log Gulch Campground

There are 70 RV and tent sites at the Log Gulch Campground in a level, grassy area along the banks of Wolf Creek. Although there are no modern conveniences like electricity or running water at the basic campsites, each one does feature a fire pit, picnic table, and freshwater. There is an enclosed bathing area on the beach at Log Gulch Campground, as well as a dock with a boat ramp and two docks with boat slips that are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Flathead River Reserve

Within the CSKT Indian Reservation, on the opposite bank of the Flathead River, is the Flathead River Reserve. There are only three private RV sites available, each with complete hookups (50 amp power, septic, water, garbage, and Wi-Fi). It’s a plus that there aren’t a ton of RVs in the area. Absolute nature is easy to find.
